Together
TOGETHER features artworks by photographer Kari Wehrs and sculptor Nathaniel Lewis, exhibiting alongside one another for the first time. Wehrs’s series “Shot” is comprised of tintype photographs of recreational shooters she meets in the Arizona desert. After Wehrs’s subjects pose with their weapons, she gives them the option to use her images as targets, creating a participatory shared experience resulting in unique photographic objects. While the clothing and vehicles in the photographs are contemporary and relatable, the Civil War era process recollects images of soldiers at war with their fellow countrymen. Nathaniel Lewis’s sculptures also examine divisive political topics and concepts of otherness, but with a tongue-in-cheek humor. His “Little Terrors” series features brightly colored versions of tools of war that are just slightly more child-oriented than commercially available products, urging viewers to question what they accept as normal and acceptable. Presented side by side, these artists’ work force us to examine the boundaries, some natural, some fabricated, between “us” and “them.”
