All the current sales and management methodologies are based on thoughts and techniques that were invented at the beginning of the 20th century by people who were born in the middle of the 19th century. For example the AIDA concept that forms the basis of most modern CRM systems was invented by an insurance salesman in 1898.
The quest to perfect the sales process has led from basic process of discounting till the customer said “yes”, to identifying a need or want and then making an argument for a product that someone would buy, to a more structured approach to a complex sales process that is best mapped and planned.
The fact is that even these refined processes and methods are becoming marginalized by an increasing immunity to traditional media and methods of advertising and selling techniques. What many very competent sales people are finding is that in this age of instant gratification, punctuation and abbreviation, established sales methodologies are no longer working.
